Termites

  • Appearance

Workers are small, soft-bodied, sterile, and wingless, about half the size of a matchhead. Workers are white or cream-colored, while soldiers have rectangular heads and large mouthparts, and kings and queens are dark-brown or black, about 3/8 to 1/2 inch long.

  • Behavior

In the spring, termites swarm to find a mate. Winged termites are attracted to light and will swarm around doors and windows.

  • Colonies

Colonies can contain thousands to millions of termites. They are social insects that live in societies mostly made up of immature individuals. Colonies grow slowly, and it may take years before Swarmers are produced.

  • Diet

Termites live in the ground and feed on plant materials. An average colony can consume 5 grams of wood per day, the equivalent of 2⅓ linear feet of a 2' x 4' pine board annually.

  • Habitat

Termites require a lot of moisture and continuous association, so they build their nests in underground soil. In structures, they live in walls, basements, crawl spaces, and other damp areas.

  • Damage

Termites and similar pests cause an estimated $30 billion in damage to crops and man-made structures in the U.S. each year.
